I’ve been taking my sweet time with Yuval Noah Harari’s Sapiens (which is a must read), but one of the many ways that humans as a species were able to evolve is as result of a set of societal rules, also know as the law. And the law only works when people believe in it. I’m not surprised that fewer people have confidence in the Supreme Court. Nora Ephron (who I was fortunate enough to meet when she was a client of my mother’s personal training business) famously and repeatedly railed against Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court starting with her commencement speech at Wellesley College, and she was right to feel that way. The law is fragile enough that it can only withstand so many chips at it. The loss of confidence in the institutions that are responsible for promulgating and interpreting the law can be devastating.That’s not a new point or a novel angle, but it can’t be emphasized enough.
